The Grand Hotel Majestic is one of the best historic hotels in the world. The hotel opened over 100 years ago. However, the building is much older. Cardinal Lambertini, later Pope Benedict XIV, built the palace in the first half of the 18th Century. Alfonso Torregiani, one of Italy’s most celebrated architects, designed it.
As if that was not enough, you can see the remains of a Roman road next to the hotel’s lovely patio. Want more? Some of the best frescoes in Bologna decorate the restaurant. Murano crystal, Ferrara marble, antique furniture, and original art complete the feast.
We spent a weekend at the Majestic and had the time of our lives. Nobody does luxury as the Italians: opulent but subtle, elegant but warm. Do yourself a favor and book a room at the Majestic. It’s an experience like no other!
The hotel enjoys the best location in Bologna, in front of San Pietro Cathedral. Therefore, you will be literally feet away from Bologna’s top attractions. The incredible Piazza Maggiore is the epicenter of the city. The iconic Neptune Fountain, the Accursion Palace, and San Petronio Basilica preside over the square.
Bologna Central train station is less than a mile (1 km) from the hotel. You can walk there in 15 minutes. There are trains that connect you to the airport, Bologna’s fair, and the rest of Italy. The private and public buses that go to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca leave from Piazza Maggiore.
Bologna is not that big. However, there’s so much to see and do that you need to be in the center. Especially if you’ll be in Bologna for a short time. Besides, the hotel is an attraction in itself, so you will be immersed in history all through your stay.
The lobby of the hotel is perfect to read, socialize, and for dolce far niente. That’s Italian for the sweetness of doing nothing. Which is basically what we did. The lights, music, and atmosphere will relax you to the bone. A marble staircase leads to the lobby.
As soon as you enter, you will see a massive Murano crystal chandelier hanging from the high ceiling. There’s a marble chimney, lovely plants, Doric columns, and original art. A monumental staircase leads to conference rooms. Go down a few marble steps, and you’ll be in the seating area.
Some of the world’s biggest artists and personalities sat down in that same lobby. We are talking about Richard Strauss, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Ava Garner, Maria Callas, Princess Diana, and the Dalai Lama, amongst others. A beautiful photo of the one and only Sophia Loren decorates a wall.
Café and Breakfast
We have to mention the café and bar next to the lobby. We had the best coffee and cookies in Bologna under an impressive vaulted crystal ceiling. Cocktails we had under a vaulted ceiling with original frescoes. All while listening to live piano. The selection and quality of the drinks will leave you speechless.
The Café Marinetti overlooks a beautiful patio. You have to go down to access the patio and the breakfast area. Original frescoes cover the walls. The floor is an original stone mosaic and the chairs are extra comfortable. Don’t forget to check the ruins of a roman road next to the patio.
We probably gained a couple of kilos just for having the buffet breakfast each day. You don’t have to though. There are plenty of healthy foods, including fresh fruits. However, we couldn’t resist the pastries, dairy products, cold meats, and eggs. All of premier Italian quality.
Enoteca and Restaurant
If you are into wine, you will love Enoteca Morandi. You can taste over 300 of the best wines in the world. The place is beautiful, with vaulted ceilings and long wooden tables. A professional sommelier will help you choose the wine that’s right for you.
You can also eat at the Enoteca. They specialize in traditional Italian food. The food is pretty good, and the atmosphere is relaxed. You can also organize private wine and food tastings at the wine cellar. But that’s not all. Even if you don’t stay at the Majestic, you have to eat at I Carracci.
I Carracci restaurant is one of the best in Italy. No wonder Michelin gave it a couple of stars. The restaurant is a must-have experience! Original 16th Century Carracci frescoes cover the ceilings. The cutlery, glasses, crystal lamps, and upholstery are uber luxurious. We had the best Bolognese pasta of our lives here!
The hotel has a total of 109 rooms and suites. Each and every unit is absolutely gorgeous! The rooms were fully refurbished in 2016 and come with modern-day conveniences. You get extra comfortable beds, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a mini bar, and a safe. Double glazed windows and perfect isolation guarantee you’ll sleep like a baby.
With an area of at least 260 feet, the rooms are big and airy. The floors are hardwood, and the lamps are made of authentic Murano crystal. The bathrooms in Carrara marble are spacious. We loved the fancy toiletries, fluffy bathrobes, and slippers. Now, if you have the money, splash it on a suite.
We got one and felt like royalty. The suites are big and have a separate seating area. The bathroom, also in Carrara marble, has a big tub and a shower. There’s a coffee machine, radio, and minibar. Our suite’s private terrace overlooked the cathedral! An electric awning protects you from the sun and rain.
Spa and Events
Relax and pamper yourself at the Spa and Wellness center after spending the day exploring Bologna. There’s a sauna, Turkish bath, and a color therapy shower that will take care of your back. Then, rest in the lounge area. The spa offers all kinds of massages and treatments.
Let the reception desk know you are heading to the spa, and prepare to be dazzled. They can arrange yoga and aerobic classes and get you a personal trainer! You can also use the fully equipped gym. We never did and decided to rest.
If you are looking for a place to have a small or big event, call the hotel. The Majestic organizes the best events in the city. The hotel features over 10 event venues! The venues are elegant and traditional but have state-of-the-art equipment.
The service in the Majestic Hotel Bologna is in a class of its own. From the moment the handsome doorman opened the door and greeted us, we knew we were in a magical place. We could tell the staff loves their jobs and are proud of the place they work in.
It was such a pleasure to smile and greet the elegant ladies that took care of our suite. Everything was spotless and in perfect shape. The guys at the reception were such fun to talk to. Cultured and fun, they gave us the best tips to enjoy the city.
As Leonardo da Vinci said: simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. That’s the kind of service you get at the majestic. Simple, professional, and very Italian! We are telling you: the hotel is an immersion into the dolce vita. We will always treasure our days at the Majestic. We’ll be back for sure!
