India has introduced a handful of different electronic visas for various purposes. Find out which Indian eVisa you should apply for, plus other helpful information here.
India is the largest country in South Asia and spans more than 3 million square kilometers. The country contains wonders like bustling metropolitan cities, lush jungles, dreamy beaches, secluded islands, and architectural wonders.
It’s no wonder why so many people wish to visit India, whether it be for tourism, business, or other reasons. Due to its popularity as an international destination, the Indian government created a handful of different eVisas (also known as electronic visas) for various purposes.
This article will talk more about the different types of Indian eVisas (as well as how to apply via OnlineVisa), how long a visitor can stay on each visa, and much more.
Different Types of Indian eVisas
There are many reasons to visit India, but the three most common purposes include tourism and traveling around the country, conducting business, and seeking medical treatment.
Indian eVisa for Tourists
This is the best option for travelers who want to visit India for tourism. Introduced in 2014, the Indian Tourist eVisa is a multiple-entry travel authorization valid for one year after the date of issue.
After entering India, travelers may stay in the country for up to 90 days on this type of eVisa. Best of all, since it is a multiple-entry eVisa, travelers may visit neighboring countries or break up their journey to India into multiple trips.
More than 100 countries are eligible to apply for the Tourist eVisa, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, and the United States, among others.
Indian eVisa for Business
A business eVisa, unlike the tourist eVisa, allows visitors to stay in India for 180 days and was specifically created for individuals who wish to travel to India for a business trip.
The Indian Business eVisa may be used to create a new company in India, visit the country to recruit new hires, sign contracts, or visit international headquarters. Travelers who hold this eVisa may stay in India for a maximum of 180 days and it is a multiple-entry document as well.
However, there are a few important things to keep in mind. First, holders of the Business eVisa may not seek employment in India. Likewise, the Business eVisa shouldn’t be confused with the Investor Visa, which gives holders permanent residency in exchange for an investment of 100 million rupees ($1.5 million USD) in an Indian business.
Indian eVisa for Medical Reasons
Finally, the Indian Medical eVisa allows the holder to visit India for treatment purposes, such as to receive medical treatment or surgery. In fact, India is one of the most popular countries for medical tourism and welcomed nearly 700,000 tourists seeking treatment in 2019.
This electronic visa gives holders the right to visit India up to 3 times per eVisa. The total stay must not exceed 60 days.
Under the Medical eVisa, travelers are also allowed to have up to 2 people as companions, who may escort the holder to their medical treatment, check-up, or surgery. However, each companion must apply for their own eVisa, which is formally known as the e-Medical Companion of Patient Visa.
Finally, travelers applying for this eVisa are required to provide an invitation letter from the doctor or hospital from which they are planning to seek medical treatment.
How to Apply for an Indian eVisa
To obtain any of the three aforementioned eVisas for India, travelers will need to fill out an online application.
The form starts off by asking a handful of questions about the applicant, including their first and last name, date of birth, nationality, and gender. There will also be questions regarding the applicant’s passport (serial number, date of issue and expiration date), and their contact information.
In order to apply for an electronic visa to India, it is necessary to have a passport that has a validity of at least 6 months from the date of entry.
During the application process, travelers will be able to choose for which eVisa they are applying.
The next section of the application will require travelers to upload an image of their passport’s biometric page and a recent photograph of the applicant (taken within the last 6 months).
After the form is filled out and double-checked, applicants are encouraged to double-check their answers and make sure the information is accurate and correct. From there, applicants will need to pay a processing fee in order to submit their application for consideration successfully.
The average processing time for an Indian eVisa is typically around two business days (48 hours), although in some cases, it may take longer. The approved eVisa will be delivered to the email address that was provided during the application process.
When traveling to India, it is recommended to keep a copy of the approved eVisa in case the border agent asks to see proof.
